Master of Arts in German and European Studies (MAGES)

Prof. Kathy Olesko

The Master of Arts in German and European Studies program is a two-year, full-time, interdisciplinary course of study that prepares students for professional careers in international business, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as academia. The program combines a sequence of required core courses during the first year of study and electives during the second year of study.

The core courses focus on Europe and its societies from the perspectives of the participating disciplines: cultural studies, economics, history, and political science (comparative politics and international relations). It also includes an interdisciplinary course on the European Union and a capstone Master's Project seminar.

Students choose their electives from a large menu of courses offered by the School of Foreign Service, the School of Business, the Public Policy Institute and the Law School. Interdisciplinary Electives (IE's) are used to create areas of strength in three of the five MAGES core disciplines. These are combined with seven free electives to form a coherent individual concentration.

Students define their own concentrations in consultation with their faculty advisors. Concentrations range from the general (i.e.- media and communications, international finance and economics, modern European history) to the more specific (i.e.- portrayals of nationalism in central and eastern Europe, immigration and urban integration, and the role of film in transatlantic dialogue). Students can also pursue a Certificate in International Business Diplomacy, Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies or a Certificate in Eurasian, Russian, and Eastern European Studies as their concentration in the MAGES program.
