Lecture with Maria Encarnacion Roca Trias
Judge Encarnación Roca Trías (Barcelona, 1944) is the Vice President and one of the twelve
Justices of the Constitutional Court of Spain, respectively since 2017 and 2012. Judge Roca has
also been a Justice of the Supreme Court of Spain, where she was the first woman ever in the
Civil Chamber of the Court.
Judge Roca is a distinguished jurist and a trail-blazer. She was a longtime Professor at the
University of Barcelona, where she was the first woman in Spain to be a Tenured Professor in
Civil Law. In 2011 she was elected the first woman Academician at the Royal Academy of
Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain. She is a member of the prestigious American Law
Institute, and of the European Law Institute.
