Along with our degree name change, we’re excited to announce the first Director of the Master of Arts in European Studies, Dr. Eric Langenbacher!
Professor Langenbacher is a true Georgetown veteran. He graduated from MAGES in one of our earliest cohorts, earned his PhD from Georgetown’s Government department in 2002, and has taught at Georgetown ever since!
His research interests center on political culture, collective memory, political institutions, public opinion and German and European politics. His most recent publications include his textbook Comparative Politics: Mapping Institutions, Power, and Legitimacy (Sage/CQ Press, 2025) and The German Polity (Rowman and Littlefield, 12th edition, 2021), a comprehensive introduction to contemporary German politics.
Dr. Langenbacher is eager to work alongside CGES Director Abraham Newman and MAES academic advisor, Christina Ruby, to create the best MAES experience possible for our students.
“During these uncertain times for the U.S.-European relationship, training the next generation of Transatlantic leaders is more crucial than ever. I am truly excited to contribute to MAES students’ education and professional development as they prepare for key policymaking roles.”
We’re grateful to Dr. Jeffrey Anderson for his service as MAGES Director for the past few years.
