Lara Defterios
Class of 2026
Hometown: London, United Kingdom
Education: King's College London, BA in International Relations
Academic & Research Interests: Energy security in Eurasia, U.S.-U.K. relations, European security, and the global energy transition.
Work Experience: I became passionate about energy and geopolitics as a result of my internship at the World Energy Council, the world’s oldest global independent energy body, ahead of its Energy Trilemma Summit in Aberdeen, Scotland. Last summer, I completed a four-month internship with the Office of European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of Energy. As well as driving my return to Washington D.C., this experience inspired much of my final dissertation at King’s, which frames energy diplomacy in the context of the Silk Road, and critically examines these dynamics in relation to China's grand strategy. Prior to graduating with my bachelor’s this year, I undertook a Government Affairs and Public Policy internship with Aveva at its London office, a software company spearheading the energy transition through industrial decarbonisation. During this period, I also had the pleasure of returning to the World Energy Council to help deliver its World Energy Congress in Rotterdam.
Why I chose MAGES: The transatlantic character of MAGES, and the engaging community it has fostered, really made the program an ideal next step in my career journey.
