Sophie al Mutawaly
Class of 2024
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
Education: Bowdoin College, Major in Government and Legal Studies; International Relations concentration, Minor in German
Academic & Research Interests: Diplomacy, Refugee Crisis Management, Law, Transatlantic Relations
Work Experience: Over the last few years, I have been engaged in the transatlantic community through my participation in the German-American Exchange. I have been a panel speaker at the 10th Annual German-American Business Day and was interviewed by the Atlantik-Brücke on the status of the transatlantic relationship. I am an active member of the Transatlantic Conversation Podcast - speaking on various topics related to the transatlantic relationship. During my undergrad, I worked in a law firm in Munich as a legal intern. I assisted on cases of transatlantic nature, most notably a European Extradition case and the prosecution of a Nazi Concentration Camp guard. And finally I have worked as a German language tutor for the past several years.
Why I chose MAGES: MAGES offers a unique opportunity to study transatlantic issues in a city at the heart of the transatlantic relationship. Being in such an international city, we have access to a global network of leaders in the field. The ability to specialize and combine my different interests under the umbrella of European Studies is especially appealing to me, given my German-American-Iraqi background.
