Redefining Europe: Belonging and Diplomacy
Friday, 23 February 2024
Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East in the past decade have led to waves of migration, leading to economic, security, and social challenges– while also causing massive debates about the identity of Europe itself. What is Europe? Where does Europe end? Who is and how can one become European? As geopolitical and climate challenges arise, there is no doubt that migration, integration, and expansion will continue challenging European notions of itself.
Not only do emerging geopolitical conflicts challenge Europe’s notion of itself within Europe, but they also challenge how Europe sees its role in the world. Europe is at a defining moment in its history, trying to legitimize its role as a regional bloc while negotiating its place within the rising ‘Great Power Conflict’ between the US and China. EC President Ursula Von der Leyen, in her 2023 State of the Union, re-emphasized the Commission and its plans for Europe to “write its own destiny.” The question is how Europe is redefining its destiny and with whom?
The 2024 Transatlantic Policy Symposium asks you to consider these emerging geopolitical issues that challenge European notions of itself both within Europe and beyond. What problems must be addressed, what are the solutions, and what actors have the most influence in redefining Europe? We welcome analysis and expertise from your respective academic discipline (Political Science, Business, Economics, History, Cultural Studies, or others).
